The ten most important questions
to ask before hiring your Disc Jockey

1. Is the DJ a wedding specialist?

There are many different types of DJs: nightclub, radio, rave, and more. Weddings really do require someone that knows weddings and enjoys doing weddings. The only DJ that is qualified to DJ your wedding is a wedding DJ. (Q: How many weddings have they done?)

The DJ is responsible for a large amount of the coordination required at the wedding reception. They should coordinate with the caterers, photographers, videographer, and more.

Most Disc Jockeys will tell you they coordinate the events at your reception, but the true test is asking for a checklist they use at each event to make sure everything is in place and all the events will flow together smoothly. (Q: How detailed are his wedding planning sheets?)

2. Does the DJ take the time necessary to plan for the success of YOUR event?

Your DJ needs time with you to get to know you and your style. Your DJ should use professional, customized planning paperwork during your planning sessions, and use that information on your wedding day as a flow sheet so you can relax knowing that all the details you have worked out are taken care of the way you want. (Q: Is the DJ willing to meet with you multiple times? At a time and place that is most convenient for you?)

3. Does he take the responsibility you have entrusted in him seriously?

Your DJ is responsible for the success of your event. Does your DJ understand this? Ask your venue event manager. Choosing the right DJ is the most important decision you will make about your wedding day.

4. Is your DJ a professional DJ?

Make sure you hire a DJ that has a vested interest in the success of your event. A professional DJ will make sure your event is successful. This includes appropriate attire at your wedding.

5. Is your DJ experienced in public speaking?

What is your DJs general attitude towards speaking on the microphone? Is he polished, elegant, professional, commanding? Your DJ should only speak as little or as much as YOU would like.

6. Does the DJ use a contract and have liability insurance?

Professionals use a contract so there is no confusion about the date and time of your event. The name of your DJ should be on the contract. This will insure that the DJ you interviewed and signed with is the DJ that will be at your wedding. Additionally, your DJ should provide you with proof of liability insurance coverage.

7. Does the DJ have written company standards?

Company Standards will help show that your DJ is a professional and, state clearly, what you can expect from his service.

8. Does the DJ play your requests? Does he have an appropriate music library?

A good wedding DJ will play what you expect to hear (from your preferences and specific song requests from your planning sessions) not what the DJ wants to hear. Your wedding DJ is there to work for you.

9. What is included in the quoted price?

All equipment and services needed from the DJ should be included in the event quote. You should have a wireless microphone available to you for toasts and other speeches. Are unlimited planning sessions included? Is there an extra charge for back-up equipment? Is mileage extra? Overnight stay? Is early set up included? (You want your DJ set up before your first guests arrive, even if the DJ is not playing at the beginning of your event, i.e. you have a string quartet playing for the ceremony and cocktails).

10. Does the DJ enjoy his job?

You probably will not ask this, but, you should know the answer to this question the first time you meet your DJ.
